Guests on DEC

Building vocabulary by exposing kids to more words.

Guests on DEC is a project to help increase literacy and expose kids to more words. Research shows that children who have access to larger vocabularies have greater reading comprehension and general academic success. Because stories contain vocabulary words not used in daily conversation, this is an excellent way to expand vocabulary.

Here’s how it works… we have special guests come to the DEC (or we go on location) and read a story.  We then post these stories so children and their families can listen and learn.

We post stories twice a week- every Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7:30pm, then re-post them on Saturday at 10:00 and 10:30 am.

We would like to increase the number of children and families enjoying the postings.  The mission of the DEC is to provide support services so that all students can be successful… Guests on DEC is one way we can assist students and families to improve literacy and vocabulary skills. Yana Kuchirko, New York University, noted the following in her article in the December 2017 Journal of Early Childhood Literacy, “language input in the first few years of life is essential for children’s language development.”
